Since April we have been working together with the members in the Paper reduction team to develop a proposal to start the Bring Your Own Cup (BYOC) Campaign.
The reason we are doing this is because waste is one of the biggest contributors to the University’s environmental impact. Currently, the waste is not recycled, making it even more important to limit the amount of waste the university produces. With thousands of students and employees at Leiden University who enjoy one or more cup(s) of coffee each day, a lot of plastic and paper cups end up in the trash. In 2016 Leiden University used 1.022.584 plastic cups and 750.000 paper cups. This campaign is needed to reduce this number of single-use (disposable) coffee cups.
This project aims to enable students and staff to buy reusable cups in university campus stores, restaurants and cafes, set up a university monetary incentive program for bringing your own cup, and educate and reach the university community through events and social media.
The main goal of the campaign is to reduce the amount of waste produced by the university. The project also has three sub-goals
- Educate the campus about the environmental benefits (i.e. diversion of waste, reduction natural resource use) of Bring Your Own Cup (BYOC)
- Create a culture of BYOC and monetary incentive program that is used by all campus dining facilities and cafés.
- Track the decreasing purchase of single-use coffee cups by dining facilities and café
We are currently talking to UFB to get the reusable cups in the assortment of the cafe’s and cafetaria’s. We also plan to approach the campus store. Hopefully, we will kick of this campaign with success in September.
